Scar Treatment Q & A
What is scar treatment?
Scar treatment refers to the products and procedures that can minimize the appearance of a scar. Scars develop because of your body’s healing process. After a wound, collagen (a fibrous type of protein in your skin and tissues) builds up in the area as your body uses it to repair the damage.
Collagen forms for several months after a wound happens. During the process of healing, blood vessels also form in the area. The scar tissue becomes raised and bumpy over time before some of the collagen eventually breaks back down.
Scars can fade for around two years after the initial injury happens. After that, what’s left is most likely permanent. However, there are options for scar treatment available at WHASN Meadows for cesarean section scars as well as scars from other surgeries or injuries.
How does scar treatment work?
At WHASN Meadows, the team treats scars using a scar gel called Silagen®. Silagen comes in several forms, including formulas with and without sunscreen. All of the products contain silicone that has been proven to help flatten and diminish scars both new and old.
When you apply a Silagen silicone gel to your scar, it doesn’t leave behind unwanted residue. To get the most from your scar treatment, you should:
- Avoid the sun, which can darken your scar
- Avoid tanning beds for the same reason
- Use Silagen according to your provider’s instructions
- Be persistent with treatment, as it can take a while to get desired results
Silagen works by creating a protective barrier over your scar tissue, which helps keep collagen from building up in the region and keeps it hydrated. Silagen products containing sunscreen can help prevent darkening or discoloration.
Who can benefit from scar treatment?
Scar treatment can benefit you soon after your wound closes. In fact, you may get better results from the treatment by starting as early as possible after your wound heals. You shouldn’t start using Silagen until after any stitches have been removed from your surgical scar or injury scar.
How long does it take to see results from scar treatment?
You’ll start seeing results from Silagen in as little as three weeks after you start applying it. The results continue to improve for around 90 days, at which point you’ll see the full effect of your efforts.
